About Camperwolf

Why Camperwolf exists, what we want to do differently and where the project may go next.

Why another camping platform?

There are already plenty of camping apps, pitch directories and websites. So why build another one?

I have asked myself the same question.

As a camper, I know many of the existing services myself. I also know some of the things that repeatedly frustrate me: features disappearing behind paywalls, perfectly ordinary places being promoted with "Premium", "VIP" or similar labels, and listings where it is difficult to tell whether the information is still current - or why a particular place is being specially recommended in the first place.

When you are camping, current and reliable information matters more than a premium label.

That is where the idea for Camperwolf came from.

What should Camperwolf do differently?

Camperwolf is intended to be a free place database maintained by the community.

All platform features should generally be available to everyone. There is no premium membership that unlocks better search tools, additional place information or other advantages.

The database is built from several data sources - wherever possible public and mostly government sources - together with contributions from the Camperwolf community.

But the idea is not simply to collect data.

Missing information can be added, incorrect details corrected and existing listings updated. If someone discovers on site that something has changed, they can share that information with everyone else.

The more people use Camperwolf and help maintain it, the more complete and up to date the database can become.

The community helps shape what Camperwolf needs

Camperwolf provides the technical platform, but what grows from it should be guided by the people who actually use it.

That goes beyond the information on individual places.

Is a place missing? It can be suggested.

Is there a feature or facility that matters to campers but is missing from the place information? It can become a new attribute.

Is an important search option missing, or is there a better idea for an existing feature? That can help shape the platform too.

Camperwolf should not dictate which information campers need. It should provide the tools that allow the community to collect, maintain and use that information.

What already makes Camperwolf different

Search for what matters to you

Instead of only searching for a particular place, you can narrow the results using different attributes.

Whether you need a particular type of place, electricity, somewhere that allows dogs or other specific requirements, the search should help you focus on what matters to you.

Keep information current together

Every registered user can help improve the data.

Missing places can be suggested, information can be added and incorrect or outdated details can be corrected.

That is a central part of the idea: people who are actually at a location often have the most current information.

Reviews with understandable criteria

Whether someone personally likes a place is subjective.

Camperwolf therefore combines personal reviews with fixed rating criteria that are relevant to campers. This leaves room for individual experiences while making ratings easier to compare.

What could come later?

Camperwolf is intended to grow with its community. Some ideas therefore go well beyond a place database.

These include, for example:

  • Groups - spaces where you can connect with other campers. You might have interests beyond camping that you want to share with others, want to meet like-minded people, or simply plan a camping trip with friends. Groups could provide shared favorites, discussion and tools for planning trips or meetups.
  • Sharing knowledge - a community-maintained knowledge base about camping, ranging from "What do I need for my first trip?" to practical tips, experience and things that are better avoided.
  • More place and event types - for example temporary camping at festivals, markets or other events, as well as other locations that may be useful to campers while travelling.
  • More community features - ways for users to exchange ideas and experience, such as discussion areas or similar features.

Which of these ideas are ultimately implemented, and what they look like, is not fixed yet. The same principle should apply here: we should not build features simply because we can, but because the community can make useful use of them.

Camperwolf should grow with its users

In the end, the idea is fairly simple:

Camperwolf provides the platform. The community turns it into a useful place database.

You can simply use Camperwolf to find places. If you want to, you can also help by adding a missing place, correcting outdated information or sharing your experience.

It does not matter whether you only use Camperwolf or contribute content yourself. If the platform helps you find the right place or gives you useful information while travelling, then the idea is already working.

And if Camperwolf eventually needs something nobody has thought of today, perhaps that will simply become the next feature.
